Supporting the Nervous System in Healing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-based, trauma-informed therapeutic approach that helps individuals process and release stress and trauma that may be stored in the nervous system. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, this approach is grounded in the understanding that trauma is not only a psychological experience, but also a physiological one that can become “stuck” in the body.
Rather than focusing solely on thoughts or narratives, Somatic Experiencing gently guides attention toward bodily sensations, helping the nervous system complete natural stress responses and return to a greater sense of regulation, safety, and balance.
What Is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing is a bottom-up therapeutic model that works with the body’s physiological responses to stress and trauma.
When overwhelming experiences occur, the nervous system can become dysregulated—stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown.
SE supports the gradual release of this stored survival energy by helping clients:
-
Build awareness of internal bodily sensations
-
Track nervous system activation and calming cues
-
Titrate (slowly approach) difficult sensations or memories in a safe way
-
Restore a natural rhythm of regulation and resilience
This approach is gentle, paced, and always guided by the client’s capacity in the present moment.
How Somatic Experiencing Helps
Somatic Experiencing may be helpful if you are experiencing:
-
Trauma or unresolved traumatic stress
-
Anxiety or chronic hypervigilance
-
Panic or physiological overwhelm
-
Emotional numbness or shutdown
-
Difficulty feeling grounded or present
-
Stress-related physical symptoms (tightness, fatigue, tension)
-
A sense of being “stuck” despite insight or talk therapy
SE focuses on helping the body complete unfinished survival responses, which can reduce the intensity of symptoms over time and support a greater sense of internal safety.
What to Expect in Somatic Experiencing Sessions
Sessions are typically slow-paced, collaborative, and centred on safety. You do not need to retell traumatic events in detail for the work to be effective.
Your therapist may guide you to:
-
Notice sensations in the body (tightness, warmth, tension, etc.)
-
Track shifts in breath, posture, or energy
-
Pendulate between activation and calm states
-
Explore grounding and orienting techniques
-
Build capacity to stay present with difficult sensations in manageable doses
The emphasis is on working with your nervous system rather than against it.
The Nervous System and Trauma Healing
A key principle in Somatic Experiencing is that healing happens when the nervous system can safely move out of survival states and return to regulation.
Over time, this process may support:
-
Increased emotional regulation
-
Reduced reactivity to stress
-
Greater sense of embodiment and presence
-
Improved tolerance for difficult emotions
-
A deeper felt sense of safety in the body
-
Increased resilience in relationships and daily life
Somatic Experiencing and Other Therapy Approaches
Somatic Experiencing often integrates well with other modalities such as:
-
Trauma-informed CBT
-
Attachment-based therapy
-
Emotion-focused work
-
Mindfulness-based approaches
-
Internal parts work (such as IFS)
Because SE works at the physiological level, it can complement talk therapy by addressing patterns that may not shift through cognition alone.
Is Somatic Experiencing Right for You?
This approach may be a good fit if you are looking for therapy that:
-
Includes the body as part of the healing process
-
Moves at a paced, non-overwhelming speed
-
Respects your nervous system’s limits
-
Does not require detailed trauma recounting
-
Supports long-term regulation and resilience
