Finding the right therapist in Kanata can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of listings, vague descriptions, and no clear way to tell who actually specializes in what you're dealing with. Aura Counselling makes that simpler. We're a team of Registered Psychotherapists offering individual, couples, family, and teen (14+) therapy from our office in the Kanata-Stittsville area, with virtual sessions available across Ontario.
What We Help With
Our therapists work with adults, teens (14+), couples, and families on a wide range of concerns. The most common reasons people reach out to us:
-
Anxiety — persistent worry, racing thoughts, panic, social anxiety
-
Depression — low mood, hopelessness, withdrawal, loss of motivation
-
Trauma and PTSD — unprocessed painful experiences, hypervigilance, emotional numbness
-
Relationship difficulties — communication breakdowns, trust issues, attachment patterns
-
Life transitions — divorce, career changes, parenthood, relocation, grief
-
Self-esteem and identity — negative self-talk, people-pleasing, boundary struggles
-
ADHD — focus, impulsivity, time management, emotional regulation
If you're unsure whether what you're experiencing fits neatly into a category, that's normal. Most people don't walk in with a diagnosis. They walk in because something isn't working and they want it to change.
Our Approach to Therapy
We use evidence-based therapeutic methods tailored to what each client needs. Our team draws from several well-researched approaches:
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you identify thought patterns that drive anxiety, avoidance, or low mood, and build practical strategies to interrupt them.
Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) focuses on understanding and working with your emotions rather than suppressing them. Particularly effective for relationship and attachment concerns.
Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy (DBT) builds skills in distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Often used for people who experience intense emotions.
Somatic and trauma-informed approaches address the way difficult experiences live in the body, not just the mind. Useful when talk therapy alone hasn't been enough.
Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT) focuses on how partners interact in real time, helping couples notice and shift the patterns that create conflict.
Your therapist will discuss which approach fits your situation during your first session. Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all, and neither is our method.
Individual Therapy
One-on-one sessions in a confidential space where you can explore what's going on without judgment. Whether you're managing a specific issue or working through something you can't quite name yet, individual therapy gives you room to understand your patterns, process difficult experiences, and develop tools that actually work in your daily life.
Couples Therapy
Every relationship hits rough patches. Couples therapy isn't only for relationships in crisis. It's for any two people who want to communicate better, rebuild trust, navigate a transition, or simply understand each other more deeply. Our therapists use structured, research-backed approaches to help couples move past stuck patterns and toward genuine connection.
Teen Therapy (Ages 14+)
Adolescence is a period of significant change. Teens face pressure from school, relationships, identity questions, and social dynamics that can feel isolating. Our therapists provide a safe space where teens can express themselves openly and build emotional resilience, confidence, and healthy coping strategies.
Family Therapy
Family dynamics shape how we communicate, resolve conflict, and relate to the people closest to us. Family therapy helps families work through tensions, improve communication, and strengthen relationships. Whether the challenge involves parenting, sibling conflict, blended family adjustments, or broader relational patterns, our therapists create a space where each family member can be heard.
What to Expect From Your First Session
The first appointment is about getting oriented. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your history, and your goals. You don't need to have everything figured out beforehand. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with in the first session.
Sessions are 50 minutes. The cost is $180 per session. Sliding scale rates are available for clients experiencing financial strain. OHIP does not cover psychotherapy, but many extended health benefit plans do. Check with your employer or insurance provider to confirm coverage.
